The Federal Benefits Package

Federal benefits are often cited as the #1 reason people choose government careers. While salaries may lag behind the private sector (especially in tech and finance), the total compensation package — including pension, health insurance, and leave — is hard to beat.

Health Insurance (FEHB)

The Federal Employees Health Benefits program offers hundreds of plan options from major insurers. The government pays 72-75% of premiums. You can choose from HMOs, PPOs, and high-deductible plans. Coverage extends to your spouse and dependents. Unlike many private employers, there's no waiting period — coverage starts your first day.

Retirement (FERS)

The Federal Employees Retirement System is a three-legged stool:

  • Basic Benefit Plan: A defined-benefit pension. After 30+ years, you receive about 30% of your high-3 average salary — every year, for life, with cost-of-living adjustments.
  • Thrift Savings Plan (TSP): Like a 401(k) but with lower fees. The government matches up to 5% of your salary. With 30 years of contributions, many feds retire with $1M+ in TSP.
  • Social Security: Federal employees are covered by Social Security.

Annual Leave

  • Years 1-3: 13 days/year (4 hours per pay period)
  • Years 3-15: 20 days/year (6 hours per pay period)
  • Years 15+: 26 days/year (8 hours per pay period)

Plus 13 days of sick leave and 11 paid federal holidays. That's potentially 50 days off per year for senior employees.

Other Notable Benefits

  • Student Loan Repayment: Up to $10,000/year, $60,000 lifetime maximum
  • Public Service Loan Forgiveness: After 120 qualifying payments (10 years), remaining federal student loans are forgiven
  • Telework: Many positions now offer 2-5 days remote work per week
  • Transit Subsidy: Up to $325/month for public transportation in qualifying areas
  • Life Insurance (FEGLI): Basic coverage at low cost, with options for additional coverage
  • Long-term Care Insurance: Available at group rates
  • Flexible Spending Accounts: For healthcare and dependent care expenses
