Getting Started with USAJobs

USAJobs.gov is the official job site for the U.S. federal government. Almost every federal job is posted here. The site can be intimidating at first, but once you understand how it works, it becomes much more manageable.

Step 1: Create Your Account

You'll need a Login.gov account to use USAJobs. This is the government's secure identity system. Create your Login.gov account first, then link it to your USAJobs profile.

Step 2: Build Your Profile

Your USAJobs profile stores your personal information, work experience, and education. Complete it thoroughly — many agencies use this information to auto-populate their applications. Upload your federal resume here.

Step 3: Search Smart

USAJobs has powerful search filters. Use them:

  • Keywords: Use specific job titles and skills, not generic terms
  • Location: Filter by state, city, or "Remote" for telework positions
  • Pay grade: Set your minimum GS level (don't waste time on positions below your qualifications)
  • Hiring path: "Open to the public" means anyone can apply; "Federal employees" means current feds only
  • Save searches: Set up email alerts so new jobs come to you

Step 4: Read the Job Announcement Carefully

Federal job announcements are long and detailed. Pay special attention to:

  • Who May Apply: Make sure you're eligible
  • Qualifications: You must meet ALL required qualifications
  • How to Apply: Follow instructions exactly — missing a document means automatic disqualification
  • Required Documents: Transcripts, SF-50, DD-214, etc.

Step 5: Apply and Wait

Federal hiring is slow. Expect 2-6 months from application to offer. Check your application status regularly on USAJobs. Statuses include: Received, Reviewed, Referred, Selected, Not Selected.

Pro Tips

  • Apply to multiple positions — cast a wide net
  • Check the "Qualifications" section for minimum time-in-grade requirements
  • Upload all requested documents on the first submission
  • If you get "Not Referred," ask for feedback — it's your right
