What You'd Actually Do

As a AI Software Engineer at the GS-2210-9/11/12, you will be part of Office of the Chief Information Officer, Office of Personnel Management. If selected, you will develop, test, integrate, document, troubleshoot, secure, and maintain enterprise software applications and approved automation or artificial intelligence capabilities that support OPM mission needs.

Key Duties

  • Develops, tests, implements, and maintains application software, features, modules, and system components using secure coding and software development practices.
  • Translates business needs into technical requirements, user stories, specifications, and traceability materials for application development and enhancement.
  • Integrates applications, interfaces, data sources, automation, artificial intelligence capabilities, and related technologies into enterprise systems.
  • Troubleshoots software, integration, deployment, performance, and configuration issues using logs, diagnostic tools, testing, and root-cause analysis.
  • Prepares and maintains technical documentation, user guidance, configuration records, training materials, and implementation support materials.
  • Participates in Agile development activities, code reviews, testing, sprint planning, backlog refinement, and cross-functional coordination.
  • Supports security, accessibility, interoperability, performance, and compliance requirements throughout the software development lifecycle.

Qualifications

  • Basic Requirements: You must have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed.

  • 4) Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.
  • AND For the GS-9 Level: Education: A Master's or equivalent graduate degree, or successfully completed two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree (including LL.B or J.D.
  • if related) coordinating electronic data exchange application issues between the data operations center, data operations center customers, and network organization.
  • OR Specialized Experience: For the GS-9 You must have one full year (52 Weeks) of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-7 level (obtained in either the public or private sectors) that is IT-related and included experience.
  • Specialized experience for this position includes all of the following: Developing or modifying application features, modules, or software components using programming languages, frameworks, development tools, or established software development practices; And Testing, debugging, or troubleshooting software, integration, deployment, or system performance issues using logs, error reports, diagnostic tools, or documented procedures; And Gathering, documenting, or updating user or business requirements and translating defined needs into technical specifications, user stories, use cases, or functional requirements; And Preparing or maintaining technical documentation, user guides, configuration records, code documentation, training materials, or lessons-learned materials.
  • For the GS-11 Level: Education: A Ph.D.
  • or equivalent doctoral degree, or successfully completed three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management or degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks.
  • OR Specialized Experience: For the GS-11: You must have one full year (52 Weeks) of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-9 level (obtained in either the public or private sectors) that is IT-related and included experience.
  • Specialized experience for this position includes all of the following: Designing, developing, testing, implementing, or maintaining software components, subsystems, application features, or data processing routines to meet defined business or technical requirements; And Integrating or supporting the integration of applications, interfaces, data sources, automation routines, or approved emerging technology capabilities into existing systems; And Analyzing and resolving application, system, integration, configuration, or performance issues and documenting findings, corrective actions, or recommendations; And Eliciting, documenting, validating, or tracing business and technical requirements and preparing technical documentation to support development, implementation, maintenance, training, or knowledge transfer.
  • For the GS-12 Level: Specialized Experience: For the GS-12: You must have one full year (52 Weeks) of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-11 level (obtained in either the public or private sectors) that is IT-related and included experience.
  • Specialized experience for this position includes all of the following: Designing, developing, testing, deploying, maintaining, or enhancing enterprise software applications or system components using software development lifecycle methods; Translating business requirements into functional or technical specifications and validating application functionality, interoperability, accessibility, security, or performance; Integrating applications, systems, interfaces, data sources, automation capabilities, artificial intelligence capabilities, or analytics capabilities with existing infrastructure or enterprise platforms; Troubleshooting and resolving application, integration, configuration, performance, security, or operational issues and implementing or recommending corrective actions; and Preparing technical specifications, architecture or process documentation, security or implementation support materials, user guidance, briefings, or recommendations for stakeholders, users, or technical teams.
